Job Description

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

This is a faculty position responsible to the Chairman, Department of Urology who reports to the Head of the Division of Surgery.

GENERAL DUTIES:

Provides clinical expertise in patient care management with emphasis in Urologic cancers. Must have a wide interest in all GU Malignancies and refer complex cases to specialist as necessary. Provides an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of Urology. Provides expertise in clinical and/or translational research. This position will be located primarily in the League City HAL location but may provide services to patients at the Main Campus, Northwest Surgery Center or other future MDACC surgical facility.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Administration

  1. Serve on institutional committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings which may include walking or driving to each meeting site. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.

II. Patient Care

Provide state-of-the-art Urologic Oncology surgery for patients with GU malignancies. Refer complex cases to specialists as appropriate.

III. Education/Teaching

Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in Urologic Oncology principles and techniques. Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which requires verbal interaction with colleagues.

IV. Research

Actively engage in or facilitate clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Woodlands and other MDACC

sites as appropriate. Assist with the development of programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping within the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation.

V. Service

Represent the Department of Urology in local, regional, state, and national matters. May require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing

with department colleagues verbally or in writing.

Participate in community based tumor boards, disease specific conference and other such meetings.

Represent MD Anderson at community events, educational forums, and among referring physician groups across the region. Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.

  1. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.
  2. Develop and maintain a clinical consultative practice for patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
    1. Provide physician staffing for the Urology Department at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other physicians with the same level of training and experience.
    2. Visually review for proper ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within 5 working days. Utilization of electronic billing applications as available and supported by institution.
    3. Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional and local hospital policies. Will require dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.
    4. Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
    5. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from the conferences.
    6. Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.
  3. Provide a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows and residents and students.
  4. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.

Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationship including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.

EDUCATION

Advance Medical Degree - MD or DO from an approved Medical School Fellowship Successful Completion of a Fellowship in Urologic Oncology from an SUO Approved Fellowship Program

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required:

  • Licensed to Practice Medicine in the State of Texas
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR), Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) OR Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Board Certified in Urology or timely progression towards certification
